2004/06/01 22:43:00 - Question for LaTeXy people...
I want to produce a document that contains in one place a set of complete descriptions of things (Exalted Charms as it happens), and in another place just a subset of that data (Name, casting cost, charm type, duration). I'd rather not keep this information in two different places in the file.

Is this even possible?

Edit: I did attempt to correctly typeset LAΤΕΧ in the title, but LJ is crap in this regard...

You know TeX is Turing complete, right? :-)

Speaking as somebody who doesn't know much TeX at all, I'd try an approach like this (lightly tested):

\def\foo#1#2#3{Name: #1, Cost: #2, Duration: #3\hrule}

\def\bar#1#2#3{#1 :}

\def\showcharms#1{
#1{Zap}{10}{3ms}
#1{Xyzzy}{60}{42s}
#1{Zog}{94}{21ps}
}

\showcharms{\foo}

\showcharms{\bar}

So's sed+dd, and you don't see me using that as a typesetting language :).

could you not subvert bibtex to do this? (random thought off top of head, not having considered the question fully; if obviously silly, say so, and i shall think more).

That might be a solution.
