It's 10 years and 6 days since John Smith died.

I feel old now.
Me too!

I'm not supposed to remember stuff that happened 10 years ago!
I wasn't even 9 then!

Eek. But... I was at school then. I'm still getting used to the concept of the 90s being a decade ago.

We had a discussion about this in a seminar last week, most of the others didn't seem to remember who he was, I started wondering if I was particularly precocious paying attentionto politics enough that I remember hearing this age 10. Maybe.

The '92 election was when I started paying attention to politics when I would've'd been almost fifteen, so perhaps. On the other hand enismirdal seemed to remember also...

My first political memories date back to the '87 general election when I was 8! I remember Thatcher resigning and I remember John Smith dying. I remember coming home one day, being the first back, switching on the telly which happened to be on BBC 2 and getting the afternoon Westminster programme which was discussing it. I thought it with my fifth year (i.e. yr 11) but if it's ten years ago that'd make it '94 and my fourth. Maybe it was during exams although it seems too earlier for that, I'm just sure I was home earlier than usual (so I'd made it a fifth year Friday when we finished an hour early because they rearranged the school day).

I remember Thatcher resigning, and having huge arguements about meaningless stuff about why this was a good thing with one of my friends who appeared to be a Tory; but I wasn't really paying political attention.

I remember Thatcher getting in for the first time, just about, but wouldn't necessarily count that as "paying attention to politics".

Really? I can remember sitting at a mac plus using gopher to get the most recent information as to what was happening.
