2004/04/22 23:03:00 - livechiark
As has been suggested before, there is now a community livechiark for, well I've described it as "users and dependents of chiark".

What about "people currently being vetted for participation in chiark"?

Dunno :). I'm trying to define policy by consensus here, which probably isn't the best plan...

"dependents of chiark". I wish I had words for the visceral contempt that inspires in me..

I think that you are reading into it meaning that I didn't intend...

It's the fact that it's even appropriate as humour that I find appalling. Chiark is a computer run by a flawed, fallible and frequently outrageously biased human being, not a life support mechanism for the weak and feeble. I don't think I'm going to be contributing much to the community.

:: rolls eyes ::

Yes, you are reading something entirely different into it than I intended.

I'm simply using the term to describe those people who aren't strictly users but who do care about things like service interruption announcements (because, for instance, they live in a house on the SGO VPN, or they frequent chiark irc).

If it's a community simply intended for technical bulletins, then it should be advertised as such.

I don't believe that the intention is that it is simply for technical bulletins, but I anticipate that such will occur. I, personally, am merely trying to capture the zeitgeist among the chiark ljers.

*shurg* If you don't like it (the computer or the community), don't use it. It's not compulsory.

You appear to have missed the point that I've already said I'm not going to use the community.

I'm already in the process of moving my various bits and pieces off chiark itself; it's never been my primary email address. There are only two things I find useful about chiark that couldn't be had anywhere else, and for the rest of it I find other systems more appropriate.

I find the strength of this reaction suprising. Every computer system on the planet is run by a flawed, fallible and at least sometimes biased human being. Nevertheless, we all rely on at least some of them to ease our work/organisation/whatever.

Indeed. However most of them don't present themselves as anything else.

This thread has reminded just how much I miss usenet and #chiark, ;P.
