It could be a sharpened pole (as indeed some dictionaries acknowledge). & outside the confines of dictionaries I've met uses which certainly didn't involve actually sharp objects.

A sharpened pole is a pole no longer.

1. a. In early use, A stake, without reference to length or thickness; now, a long, slender, and more or less cylindrical and tapering piece of wood (rarely metal), as the straight stem of a slender tree stripped of its branches; used as a support for a tent, hops or other climbing plants, telegraph or telephone wires, etc., for scaffolding, and for other purposes. (See also 2.)

If you sharpen it it becomes a stake, spike, or spear.

Rubbish.

Sharpen a telephone pole, and see how many people you can persuade it's not a pole any more, for instance.

Unless it's from Poland, of course.
