I've seen many calls, mainly from America, to "be strong". The day that someone holding threats of bombing before us stops us from carrying on with our day to day life weakens us enough that we need this encouragement is the day that the bombers win. I've seen people describe Londoner's reactions to today's events as
the Blitz spirit, but it also calls to mind Churchill's famous speech.
…we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight on the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender.
This is a different battle. Here we fight in public debate, and the hearts and minds of the People. But we are fundamentally the same people that Churchill was describing; we will carry on this fight.
Changing our lifestyle to combat this
terrorismwould be giving in. Instead we will offer up a prayer for the dead and the bereaved; and then go about our lives and our businesses, not unmoved, but unchanged; like our parents and grandparents.
