A common thread among geeks that I hear (if only infrequently) is "Oops, I just typed reboot at the wrong machine by mistake". At this point it's usually irretrievable.

I wonder if it might be a good idea to produce a wrapper around reboot that requires the syntax reboot nodename, and will only reboot if the nodename is correct…

Then you'll get the same geeks complaining that when they typed "reboot testbox" into the productionbox root prompt, it didn't DTRT. So I predict that the first creeping feature would be to produce a second wrapper which, if the first wrapper failed, attempted "ssh $1 reboot $1" or something similar.

And the second feeping creature will be that when you type reboot ozymanias into the root prompt on ozymandias, it offers the helpful suggestion "This box is called 'ozymandias' not 'ozymanias'. Would you like to reboot it anyway? [y]"...

Anyone want to guess what happens next?

Common as in Not distinguished or exceptional; inconspicuous; ordinary; plebeian; or even Belonging to or shared by, affecting or serving, all the members of a class, considered together. Infrequently as in not on a daily basis.

Indeed. It is distinguished by its rarity, and it certainly isn't a feature of all conversations you have with geeks.

I've never done that, but I do have the machine name in the shell prompt. I do remember other people doing that but still confusing hammer.chu and hammer.thor, but I never had a hammer.chu account.
