2004/10/15 12:56:00 - The consequences of exercising "Free Speech"
This week, Doonesbury has been running a sequence of strips called the "Honest Voices Reading List", which include links to sites that (presumably) might convince people to vote for Kerry.

This morning the link was for an editorial of the Lone Star Iconoclast; about how they weren't endorsing Bush this time around.

The subsequent editorial about the response to that editorial is a bit scary...

Yes, it is scary. There has been vandalism at Kerry HQ offices in south Texas as well, I believe.

I know I'm daft, but I just purchased a 6 month subscription to the Iconoclast to show them some support. It was $22.50, and it will be an interesting read to see what Dubya's up to when he's permenantly back at the ranch....

A _bit_ scary? Typical British understatement, I assume.

Surprising? No: more a sign of the times. This election has very really become a fucking Crusade.

Though it took balls to publish something like that in the very belly of the Beast, his foresight might be a little lacking if he only expected a small reaction.

Heaven knows Bush has little enough respect for the Constitution when it disagrees with him, who'd expect any less of his most fervent sheep supporters?

-D., already in Canada, nowhere to run. :D

It's only a bit scary because I already thought America was almost that bad.

In retrospect, I phrased my comment poorly earlier. I blame disbelief and shock.

The fact that they disagree is not what bothers me (if only because I expected it). Also, your freedom to speak means my freedom to disagree with you. Of course.

Note that after this came to light, both the editorial and the reaction, this guy's paper became much better known all across the world, and I think he'll come out ahead. Certainly more people have heard and read this editorial than likely would if they'd just left him alone. I wonder why the right continually refuses to realise this?

But I digress. The fact that they disagree violently enough to try and put him out of business simply because he disagrees with the general opinion does bother me, both because it speaks to the tone of this election, and because it reflects a fundamental disconnect from reality on the part of these people.

I especially like the comment in this article, where a Texas prof suggests that some of them are motivated by the loss of fucking tourist revenue if Bush is removed from office?

W. T. F.

And what happens if sanity prevails and Kerry wins? Will people like this take it lying down?

Yipes. This's turned into an entry on its own. Sorry 'bout that.

ah, Canada - that Third World Country to our north. ;-)

Aren't you afraid to take medications up there? Our Prezedent says them's no good for us Americans.

And yet he was willing to trust our flu vaccines. How generous of him.

Seen this before?

Drawn by the guy who does Ozy and Millie.

I believe that the word best describing my reaction to the latest gossip from America is 'schadenfreude'.
