Artificial intelligence turned out to be harder than expected, mostly, I think. I still hold out hope for a collection of clever robot servants and suchlike, though.

The real people are off somewhere having unlimited leisure time. It's only been since they programmed we androids with sufficently good AI that we don't usually notice that they've been able to leave us to run things.
