2005/11/22 02:00:00 - Puerto Rico
After playing No Merci Post-Pizza split into two groups, one of which indulged in a cut-throat variant of Hearts suggested by </a></b></a>simont while </a></b></a>simont, </a></b></a>naath, </a></b></a>ptc24 and myself played Puerto Rico, a game I've played a couple of times before, but haven't really got the hang of. It requires quite a lot of thought (but in a rather different vein to No Merci), and I was rather surprised to come a not particularly-distant second to </a></b></a>simont's not entirely unsurprising win.

Yes, you were doing plausibly. In fact I wondered, in retrospect, whether you might have been able to beat me with a bit more ruthless play. You had your two large buildings filled before I got my second even built, so if you'd then mayored aggressively you might have been able to force the game to end before I was ready. This would also have avoided one or two of the final captain phases which worked out particularly well for me.

One of the aspects of Puert strategy which I had the hardest time getting to grips with when learning it at the Gallery was the tactical use of the game-end conditions. It was never quite clear to me when you should be trying to end the game and when you should try to prolong it. But this case seemed reasonably clear.

Incidentally, do you mean "not entirely unsurprising"?

I corrected it from "not entirely surprising" to "not entirely unsurprising"; but it's not clear to me which version you saw!

I saw the latter, and I was querying whether you really meant it. "Not entirely unsurprising" == "slightly surprising"; and given that I was the experienced player explaining the rules to the novices, I would have thought that would make me the person to bet on, all other things being equal.

Do you mean you expected someone else to win? Or, perhaps, that your judgment of how the game was going caused you to expect someone else to win during it?

(If your answer is "I can't remember, it was weeks ago", I'll understand. I only just got the comment notification for your reply :-)

Hmm. In tbe idiolect in which I grew up "not entirely unsurprising" means "entirely unsurprising".

Hmm. That seems a bit illogical when I put it that way.
