40 ahead
What restrictions does the sign to the right place you under?

(There is one very similar on Milton Road at the moment)

None, it's an informational sign (square) warning you of a forthcoming mandatory speed limit.

How confusing, since it's only by the addition of the word "ahead" that it looks any different to the (apparently actual) speed limit signs that were on the end of Cowley Road for six months (until they took the square yellow bit off).

None. It's warning you to watch out that there will be a 40mph speed limit a bit further up the road.

None whatsoever, it merely serves as warning of a limit ahead. http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/signs08.htm

It *should* be a 40 mph speed limit sign, no matter what decorating text it has. It seems the Highway Code disagrees with me, though.

(I think warnings of impending speed limits should be greyed out)

The irony of this is that looking at the entry in this layout had the "mornington crescent" sign on the right.
