2005/04/20 10:53:00 - Hmm…
John Paul II not being Pope is like Margaret Thatcher not being Prime Minister.

And once again, I can answer 'Is the Pope Catholic?' only to true statements.

What, it seemed like such a good idea until we saw the replacement?

Thatcher -> Major. Bad for party, bad for country, /bad/.
JPII -> Benedict XVI. Look - *Bush* has endorsed this guy.

Having said that, he gets the benefit of the doubt from me. It's just that I don't predict that benefit lasting too long.

That was much my point. Perhaps we were using "it" to denote different things.

And most people don't predict that Benedict lasting too long, either.

Eh? The only mistake Major made was Norman Lamont.

Admittedly, it was a pretty goshdarned big mistake, but it was recovered *within his own premiership* and more which wasn't entirely bad going.

Still not sure he lived up to his illustrious predecessor.

Well, no. She was the best Prime Minister since Churchill's wartime one. So it'd have been difficult.

(Not discussing Maggie's lustre; she did some very good things, some very bad things.) I'm not sure the electoral damage that the Community Charge did to the Tories allowed Major to be particularly illustrious; with a wafer thin majority and a divided party, it's very hard to achieve great things.

They fucked up rail privatization all on their own. Probably a longer-lasting error than Norman Lamont, too...

Oops, forgot that one. Yes, they did. Although amazingly it hasn't actually worked out as badly as it really ought to have done (as in, it's about as bad as it always was, rather than getting worse which is what you'd have expected).

Ooh ... that is debatable.  Major was like Thatcher without the talent -- all the sod the poor attitude, none of the stylish economics to make it even partially viable.

We were discussing the possibility of giving prime ministers new names, like "Margaret II" and "William Pitt the Younger"

"William Pitt the gleam in the milkman's eye."

(Or were you objecting that there was already a Pitt the younger, and so someone else couldn't be? If so, that's the one I meant, and was pretending had adopted that name on election.)

"William Pitt the gleam in the milkman's eye."

I shall be giggling about that all day, and no one will understand why. :-)

We should have T-shirts made up.

"If I seem to be laughing for no reason, I'm probably thinking about blackadder"

"...don't ask, you wouldn't get it"

"...revelling in shadenfreude"

"... be afraid. Be very afraid." :)
