2005/04/07 17:05:00 - Favourite character meme.
OK, I'll bite. The theory behind this one is that you guess who my favourite character is in various thingums. Just to be revolutionary I'll divide them down into visual and written-word...

Visual

  1. Doctor Who
  2. Babylon 5
  3. Bugs
  4. X-Men (the two recent movies)
  5. Star Trek (TOS)
  6. Star Trek (TNG)
  7. The Princess Bride
  8. Dogtanian and the Three Muskerhounds

Written

  1. Doctor Who
  2. JK Rowling's Harry Potter (par naturellement)
  3. Swallows and Amazons
  4. The collected works of RA Heinlein
  5. Robin Hobb's Assassin/Liveship/Fool sequence
  6. Anne McCaffrey's PERN series
  7. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time
  8. The works of David Eddings

Guesses with reasoning encouraged :-)

doctor who. only 40 years worth of work to choose from, its too easy! I'll go for Rassilon given that he has the longest beard I can remember in any of the DW stories :)

david eddings. Sarabian, that one is just so obvious ;)

OK, here we go then.

Visual:
1) The Doctor (Tom Baker version), since he pretty much defined the character. If it's got to be someone else then Romana2 - the only assistant who could hold her own.
2) Cmdr. Susan Ivanova. Because, otherwise, Ivanova will rip your lungs out...
3) Ros. Least irritating of the three if memory serves.
4) Mystique. Polymorphs are cool.
5) Scotty. Always solving things with a deus ex machina but he did it with style.
6) Cpt. Jean-Luc Picard, because he actually used the word "merde" on air.
7) Inigo Montoya. "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means..."
8) Juliette. Just as capable and determined, but not an ice-cold bitch like Milady.

As for the books, the only series I've read any of is Harry Potter. The "par naturellement" would suggest Mme. Maxime, but I think I'm going to have to say Hermione...

1) No and no. Tom Baker's often my favourite of the Doctors though (it does vary sometimes).

2) Well, d'uh :). Ivanova is God.

3) I think Ros is my second favourite character, but the whole Ros/Channing plot sort of put me off a bit.

4) Yes, but. I don't like her attitude. So, that's a No.

5) "How else would I keep my reputation as a miracle worker?", but no.

6) Isn't that a bit of a lame reason?

7) Yes! "There is something you do not know!"

8) Of course...

(and it's not Hermione)

So that's: Susan, Inigo and Juliette right.

6) Yup. I tried to think of any actual characters in TNG but was having trouble ;) (Tasha Yarr?)

7) I am not left-handed.

Right. Using my extensive knowledge of all of the above I think I can make a fair guess as to favourates, not to mention a good guess as to why they're your favourates:

Visual
1 - The Rani, she was hot.
2 - Talia Winters, she was hot.
3 - Ros, she was hot.
4 - Storm, she was hot.
5 - The green-skined orion slave girl from the pilot, she was really hot.
6 - Troi's Mum, She was hot, and got neckid in one episode...
7 - Westley, he was hot.
8 - Milady, Meeeow.

Written
Now this one's a little harder but I think I got it all, Senji being a Senji...
1 - The lead woman colonist in the book that had the giant wasp larvae eating a space colonists in hibernation on a space ship. I seem to remember she was pretty hot, or at least it got pretty hot that episode. The Doctor's Jelly babies melted.
2 - Hermione, she's shit hot.
3 - Roger, Duh!
4 - I think one of the planets in Starship Troopers was hot and desert-like. Yeah, that one.
5 - Erm. I'm going to say Sol on this one.
6 - Anne McCaffery of course.
7 - Trick question. RJ's Conan series is much better. And from that I pick the evil sorceress that Conan nearly rapes because she cast a love spell on him.
8 - Who? I mean, erm, that girl, you know, the hot one...

I so know what the hell I'm talking about ;)

My instinctive answer for Swallows and Amazons is Titty. I'm not sure I can give reasoning. Possibly her creative bent. Although if one were being literary one would have to go for Dot.

I'll think about the others (or at least the ones where I'm familiar enough with them) and get back to you.

So I'll try Dot!

HP -- Ron.

Pern, mmm, interesting one. There are so many to choose from. I'll try Menolly.

I've not read enough Eddings to have an opinion.

Visual
Bugs -- The woman team leader. Don't expect me to remember names -- I think Bugs was pre-Uni ...

X-men, only seen the first film and can't remember the characters well enough.

Dogtanian -- yay, I remember that! But not well enough to answer favourite characters!

Star Trek mmm TOS -- Ohuru
TNG Troy

There's no reasoning!

Hmm, at this point I have to admit to having a tied preference on the S&A one, but yes, Dot is one of the tied people.

Bugs: do you mean Ros or Jan?

Others: No! :) (Menolly's a bit irritating, particularly later on)

Bugs: do you mean Ros or Jan?

I don't know! The one who rushed around doing stuff not the one who sent them on missions. My brianˆH brain is telling me that this means that I mean Ros not Jan but ICBW.

S&A You've ruled out Titty, Nancy and Missee Lee and Roger. So we're left with
Peggy, John, Susan, Dick, Tom, The D&Gs (whose names escape me and I returned Mark's copy of Coot Clubto him on Sunday. Joe.) and Port and Starboard out of the children. But there's Captain Flint and the Swallows' parents (even if dad is absent quite a lot), and the Amazons mum. There's even the Great-Aunt but I some how don't think it'll be her! I suppose there's Jim (from ISWDMTS) and the Mastodon and friends from Secret Water. There's Peter Duck too. The lad from the farm in Picts and Martyrs (who catches the rabbit). And Timothy the Armadillo. Mrs Barrable. The Doctor and wife. Mmm, there are quite a lot of characters when I start thinking about it! The Swallows' Dad is great for his logic (If duffers best drowned, if not duffers won't drown) but I doubt he's a major enough character. I think I'll say Captain Flint.

Pern, F'nor.

You mean Ros, and no. (I think someone else already guessed her).

Capn Flint: No, although he's probably the best Adult of the lot (even better than Peter Duck!)

F'nor: Good, solid, dependable, but not particularly interesting. No, although he'd make a good role-model.

I'll try Jan then! Just because! (well you can't have like the one played by Henry-from-Neighbours. The other one was ok I suppose (I can see him but names?????))

So, a child... John.

Pern -- The trouble with Pern is that there are sooo many possiblities. I mean, various different centuries, dragonrider, hold or craft etc. So is it a 'modern' dragonrider?

John? No.

Jan - yes :). The two blokes were Beckett and Steve. Steve was played by two different actors during the course.

Pern: not a modern dragonrider, no. (is this twenty questions?)

Which one was Henry-from-neighbours?

Now, is that not 'modern' or not a dragonrider? The Master Harper (Robinton that is)?

Her name is another clue. I remember when we read some at school I was about the only person who could take that seriously :)

(I also remember asserting to the teacher that tacking was going into the wind, not sideways. And that everyone guessed, when told that one of the names might be found amusing now but not then, that it would be fanny.)

I have no idea at all, but since I've never found another adult that had read the S&A series: did you notice that by the end of the series John and Nancy kept finding reasons to disappear off together for vast portions of the book? It's most obvious in Great Northern where they vanish somewhere near the start and barely reappear again until the end, and even then they're never out of each other's company. I thought that was highly suspicious ;-)

Nancy was always my favourite character. I'll guess her :-)

Of the ones I can name a character from, which aren't guessed:
Visual:
3. Rogue (no reasoning)

Written:
2. Luna Lovegood
4. The main character in Stranger in a Strange Land (because that's the only Heinlein character I can currently recall)
5. Malta (or the Fool, but first guess Malta).
7. Lanfear.

As you can see, I think you prefer odd female characters, mostly from nicks and icons.

Rogue: 10/10 right :)
Luna: Yup. It probably was Hermione before she turned up, or maybe one of the Staff, but definitely Luna since; she's appropriately quirky.

Stranger: I don't actually like that book. The character's called Mike, IIRC.
Malta: No, nor the Fool.
Lanfear: She's the close second there. I enjoy Lanfear (no, not like that!), but she's not really my favourite.

Ok, I'll have a go at some of the written ones, though I am probably totally wrong:
2. JK Rowling's Harry Potter (par naturellement) - (already solved, and I agree that Luna is an excellent character!)
5. Robin Hobb's Assassin/Liveship/Fool sequence - Althea?
7. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time - Perrin?
8. The works of David Eddings - Senji, of course.

Perrin - no, although he's the most interesting of the three boys.

Ok, how about Min? She is definitely interesting enough. Interesting, because we still don't know where her visions come from and how they work or if all of them will come true.
