  3. I'll try to explain it.

Nomic, if you don't already know, is a "game of rules modification".

Some years ago, when I was a little fresher, there were three large Nomic games online (all of which were apparently dominated by Australians at the time). I joined Thring which was reasonably quiet and sedate and stayed well clear of Agora and Ackanomic.

About 18 months later, after getting to know slakko and having a few more adventures in nomics (and Thring going the way of all things) he finally pursuaded me to join. It ate up a lot of my online time after that.

It wasn't so much the main game (which was ridiculously hard to win by that point) as the various sillynesses of subgames and the community that it made up that made it enjoyable.

Exalted because though I understand the word, I don't know why it's an interest. (Whereas I guess zelazny is there to be an interest starting z!)

Cyteen is a book by C.J.Cherryh. It is also the planet on which that book is set.

The book makes up about 1/3 of the words (hand estimation) of what is called the Allience and Union series, and provides most of the extant background on the Union of that name.

The book itself though is an exploration if issues of selfhood and freedom. And other less pretentious things.

It won the Hugo Award in 1989.

ai

It could stand for Artificial Intelligence. Oh, that. On the other hand, it might be Japanese (sorry, can't post the Kanji) in which case you'll have quite a task explaining it: there's more than one meaning!

Failing that, please explain 'Cyteen', if you haven't lready done so for Naath. It's a good book, as is 'Devil to the Belt', set in a convincing world... but it's not a universe and a journey the way that the Faded Sun turns out to be. Or Middle-Earth, or the Culture. Cyteen's interesting, but there's not enough of it or in it to be an interest.

Artificial Intelligence. I'd really like to be working on it; sadly I'm not cut out to be an academic....

As to the other; I disagree. Cyteen assumes a lot of stuff about the world and the Union's history that isn't made explicit in the book, in much the same way as the LotR does. There are implied stories there that could make up another two or three books of the same size -- many more than in the rest of the A&U put together probably.

I thought that was obvious :).

It's an exercise in reflexivity and paradox. I believe that pthalogreen is to blame for the specific formulation.

Latin: Its the only foreign language that I've got an A-grade GCSE in. Also its a lot more structured than 'modern' languages which appeals to my geeky brain...

Surely not a real name?

Amber Diceless is a role-playing system set in Roger Zelazny's Amber cosmos. It is unusual among RP systems for not using dice (hence the name).
