Does anyone want to employ me full time to write and maintain a sanely written, Free, multiple-protocol, portable, console (and graphical if you insist) Instant Messenger client?

Thought not. :(

A quick google throws up NAIM. Did it fail the "sanely written" ?

Hmm, I hadn't encountered that one before. On the other paw it doesn't support MSN or Y!M (Y!M is definitely a core requirement; MSN might not be).

And their website is now giving me 403 errors. Strange.

Instant Messenger. That's just asking for there to be a million broken clients out there, and no good ones.

No. I suspect the logic goes something like this:

Anyone employing you full time on such a project would presumably want to make money on it.

Making money on a free product is always challenging, and generally needs a rather large market.

This means the base platform would have to be Windows, as it still has a massive majority of the OS market.

I don't think at this point "sanely-written", "portable" and "console" are all possible simultaneously.

"console" is quite simple to get to once you have "GUI" so long as you write it with that in mind; but... :)

I was about to suggest CenterICQ and then I read your stipulations. Well, three out of four ain't bad.

That's the one that I'm using. The code quality can be summed up by two statements.

  1. Much of the code is written in C++

  2. Much of the code doesn't know the difference between free, delete, and delete[]

Wouldn't this idea = Trillian? OK, not Trill Pro, but definately the free version.

Trillian is neither really console nor reliable at connecting to Y!M, and with some of the features in the latest release (v3) I think we can discard "sanely-written" as well.

I would ... get back to me once I'm independently wealthy and can afford to sponsor projects like this.
