Static is horrible.

On Sunday evening, I was getting static shocks when I touched a metal bannister, this was unpleasant!

the problem with that being that you become averse to touching metal bannisters, so the static builds up further....

I believe that if you clench your fist and touch things with your knuckles, the static zap is much less noticeable (because your muscles are already contracted, so much less happens when the electrical jolt tells them to contract). I could be wrong, but since I started rapping the car on the roof on getting out I don't recall being zapped by it :-)

Fingernails also seem to send static away without actually hurting as they have no muscles in. This requires long fingernails, of course.

Pushing a loading trolley with nylon wheels on a vinyl floor while wearing rubber-soled boots := lots of static.

I was, at that time, stacking shelves in a DIY store. At that particular moment, a customer asked: "Do you have this in stock?", reaching out and handing me a copper valve joint.

ZAP! A static discharge in broad daylight

It's very rare to both see and hear a static discharge in broad daylight.

Rare, too, to explain to the store manager that you've nearly killed a customer and, having fished him out of a wrecked display, you have to sort and remount the whole of plumbing & heating spares. Six hundred separate lines to be picked up, sorted and rehung.

Happy days. Meanwhile, the source of that image, Mike's Electric Stuff is doing something lethal with high-voltage discharges at Dorkbot tonight. Don't bring sensitive electronics - laptops, i-pods, battery torches, mechanical watches, etc.

The doors through to the Rutherford building in the Cav have given me static shocks so many times I now involuntarily flinch before touching the handle. Conditioning in action!

They're good like that, aren't they? I think they've done something special to the carpet there, since they'll give me a shock even if I've only come out of the loos.

Surely sensible conditioning would lead to the wearing of insulating gloves? Zap this! ;-)
