These are cute. You can have things like a fox for </a></b></a>atreic or a dragon for </a></b></a>enismirdal. Even a bat for </a></b></a>ceb, although there's no badger for j4 (although there are other mustelids…).

Edit: And how could I forget </a></b></a>davethedog?

Edit (2005/11/27): The page linked at the top has now moved to here.

I think </a></b></a>j4 is close enough at that scale...

Of course you have to use a faffy bunch of HTML to achieve it. Before I read the link, I was expecting something like <lj user="flibble" icon="bat">...

That would be nice; eh? :)

I wonder if you could emulate that with a bookmarklet (to do some preprocessing).

Of course, the site does work out the faffy html (which is the same as the underlying faffy html that <lj user=> produces anyway) for you...

Or better still, allow each user to set their own little icon, and then just do <lj user="flibble"> and have it automatically pick user "flibble"'s favourite icon.

That, of course, requires a database lookup per <lj user=> tag.

True, although I'd guess you could mitigate that by caching. There are likely to be many reads of LJ posts shortly after they're written, and not so many later on; so you expect to see a lot of lookups within a short time for the same users, those being whoever has been namechecked in the most recent posts.

hmf. Maybe to reduce the load on the DB, store the img somewhere on personal webspace; on reflection, no easy way of tagging that without another DB lookup.

grmbl.

LJ already appears to already rely heavily on a middleware caching architecture.

Why would that be more expensive than the one that already turns erroneous <lj user=> tags into error messages?

Good point. I'd forgotton that it was already making a db lookup.
