2004/09/20 23:47:00 - Grrrrrrrrrr.....
I've just spent about 50 minutes trying to get ysolde to use what I consider a 'sensible' console display mode.[1]

Now, I already have an Acorn MDF fragment for this mode; created using a nice WYSIWYG application called !Modelines. Simple; I think; I can just convert these numbers into fb.modes format. Well, fb.modes stores four less numbers than the MDF does; but I just add these together based on the diagrammes and everything seems fine.

FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument

Y'what?

FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO: Invalid argument

*sigh*

At this point pm215 suggests I look at the kernel code; so I do. And the kernel code is in fact figuring out the exact same values I have in my MDF fragment to feed into the VIDC.

Now, any sane person might hope that there would be an alternative interface so that I didn't have to go through the song-and-dance routine of trying to figure out what fb.modes arguments I need to get the VIDC arguments that I know work.

I feel a kernel hack coming on...

Maybe the kernel is trying to be compatible with X modelines.

I think the kernel is trying to maintain compatability with the i386 framebuffer code. It's definitely not compatible with X modelines; which is why there is a conversion utility...
