Hm...from what language is that? I imagine, if it is English, it is one syllable. Or two very short ones.

I think it's a name; and I think it's Scandinavian. But I could be wrong on both counts.

And I have no idea how to pronounce it even in English!

Nowegian, I would guess, given that a cursory search turns up Norwegian economist Trygve Haavelmo and, more likely to be known, the first UN Secretary-General Trygve Lie. The "y" appears to be one of those high-rounded vowels we (no longer) have in English, the "e" is a schwa, stress on the first syllable.

As I recall, the 'y' is a bit like a German u-umlaut?

I don't know any German, so I've no idea how "ü" would be pronounced....

Take a good (though late) advice from a grolim:

Trygve is, like you thought, a Scandinavian name, probably more common in Norway than in Sweden. Both languages pronounce it the same way, though. The 'y' is almost like the German 'ü' and the 'e' should be pronounced like the 'e' in words like 'next' or 'send'. Hope this helps.
